I’ve been a dentist for over twenty years, treating adults and children of all ages.  As a mom, I like caring for our pediatric patients!  When children suffer from a dental visit, oftentimes it is because of something the parents have accidentally done (or not done).  That is unfortunate, particularly since it’s so avoidable. 

Rule #1: Ask the dental office about how to best prepare your child for what to expect at the dental visit.  Kids are extremely perceptive and will feel your unhealthy vibes if you are fearful, no matter how much you attempt to conceal it.  Your dental office will have suggestions and perhaps some age-appropriate reading stuff you can use.

Rule #2: Schedule the trip for a time when your child is not tired.  A healthy snack before the appointment is also a fantastic idea.  Kids who are exhausted and hungry will probably be cooperative.  As a practicing dentist, and also a mother, I have a fridge with healthy drinks and snacks in my room for such a necessity!
